DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team swept the University of Wisconsin-Superior by scores of 7-5 and 4-2 in a doubleheader at Wade Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Game 1: CSS 7, UWS 5 (F/10)
The first game of the day would take extra innings to decide. With the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the 10th, defensive replacement James Fuerniss (Lonsdale, Minn./New Prague HS) would hit a walk-off two-run home run to give the Saints the 7-5 victory.

After a scoreless first inning for the Saints that left them trailing 1-0, they responded in the second with three runs to take a 3-1 lead. The first two runs came off a double by Brad Fossum (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake HS (Concordia-St. Paul)) that allowed Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and Eric Pearson (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) to score. A single by Braydon Hanson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (UW-Whitewater)) drove in Fossum for the third run of the inning.

The 'jackets were then able to take a two-run lead after four runs across three innings, three of which came off a three-run home run, but the Saints cut the lead to one run thanks to a RBI by Pearson that allowed Hanson to score, making it 5-4 in favor of UWS heading into the sixth inning.

Pearson then hit a solo home run in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5. The Saints stranded the bases loaded in the eighth and the contest went to extra innings. The Saints were able to limit UWS to one hit in the top of the 10th. In the bottom frame, Hanson reached on an error to open the inning. Two batters later Fuerniss, who came in the game in the ninth inning as a defensive replacement, hit a two-run no-doubter over the left field wall to give the Saints the 7-5 victory. By the way, that was his only second plate appearance of the season.

Jerry Gooley (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) earned his first collegiate win on the mound for CSS, pitching the final four innings and not giving up a run. Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS) struck out four in six innings for the no-decision.

Pearson was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Saints offense.

Game 2: CSS 4, UWS 2
The second game was more a pitcher's duel between Jake Sande (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) for CSS and former Saint August Anderson. CSS had just enough offense to hold off the Yellowjackets (6-12, 0-4 UMAC) for the 4-2 victory.

Sande pitched the first eight innings for the Saints, not allowing a single run. Neither team had a run in the first three innings, but CSS took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth after another home run by Pearson that also brought in Aaron Weber (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Pierz HS).

The Saints doubled their lead in the sixth inning after a two-run single by Fossum drove in Lane Girtz (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy HS) and Pearson. UWS was able to cut the deficit in half in the ninth inning and had the tying run at the plate, but the Saints prevailed 4-2.

Sande got the win to improve to 3-1 on the year. Fossum was 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Pearson doubled and homered.

Kemp Wins No. 300
The game two victory was Head Coach Corey Kemp's 300th of his coaching career. He reached 300 wins in less than 10 full seasons. He is the second-winningest active coach in NCAA Division III with a .746 winning percentage.
