DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team dropped the first game of its doubleheader against Northland College 15-10, but followed it up with a resounding 16-0 win on Tuesday at Wade Stadium.
Game 1: NC 15, CSS 10
The teams combined for 14 total runs through the first three innings, but nothing would be scored until the ninth inning when both teams combined for 11 more runs as the LumberJacks (10-22-1, 4-10 UMAC) handed CSS its first conference loss with a 15-10 victory.
After the first inning, the Saints had earned a 2-1 lead, but trailed 4-3 after two innings. The third inning proved to be a big turning point in the game as Northland took advantage of a Saints error to plate five unearned runs in the inning, including a three-run home run. After CSS got two runs in the bottom of the third, the game stood at 9-5 in favor of the 'Jacks and remained that way until the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth Northland was able to score six runs, earning them a 15-5 advantage. The Saints were able to score five runs, but couldn't rally further, and the game finished 15-10 in favor of the LumberJacks.
Northland pounded out 20 hits in the game one win. Noah Cross had four hits with three RBIs and also earned his first win of the season, going 8.2 innings and striking out five.
Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) had a double, triple and three RBIs to lead the St. Scholastica offense.
Game 2: CSS 16, NC 0 (F/7)
Four doubles and four triples in the second game helped the Saints respond in a big way to their earlier loss. The Saints scored in every inning they batted en route to a 16-0 victory in seven innings.
CSS' first run of the game came after a sacrifice fly by Wollenzien drove in
Lane Girtz (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy HS) in the first inning. They then added five more runs in the next inning, after RBIs by
James Fuerniss (Lonsdale, Minn./New Prague HS) and
Brad Fossum (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake HS (Concordia-St. Paul)) and a RBI double by
Justin Fleming (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS).
Tim Munn (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) was able to score the fifth of the inning after a wild pitch allowed him to steal home.
Eric Pearson (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) hit a solo home run in the third inning and the Saints earned a 10-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning. They were able to increase their lead even further after a five-run fifth inning. RBIs came from Wollenzien, Pearson and Munn, plus a RBI triple by
Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS). CSS' final run came in the sixth inning after a double by Venske allowed
Drew Sathrum (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) to score.
Jake Sande (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) earned the win on the mound for the Saints, facing 22 batters and throwing seven strikeouts.
Jack Horman (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) struck out the side in the seventh inning in relief.
Venske was 5-for-5 with two triples, a double and five RBIs. Fuerniss was 4-for-5 with three runs scored. The Saints offense had 20 hits in the game two win.

The Saints (22-9, 13-1 UMAC) were scheduled to host the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Wednesday, however due to the forecast, those games will now take place in La Crosse tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m.
