MANKATO, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team concluded the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) portion of the regular season with a doubleheader split against regular season champion Bethany Lutheran College on Sunday.
Game 1: CSS 5, BLC 1
The Saints used a three-run fourth inning to open up a tight game and hand the Vikings their first UMAC loss with a 5-1 victory.
Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) had a strong performance in the pitching circle, scattering five hits, while striking out four and not allowing a walk.
The offense gave Schley a lead to begin with as Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) continued to swing a hot bat and drove in two runs with a single in the top of the first. Bethany got its lone run of the game with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the first.
With the score still at 2-1 in the fourth inning, Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) had a two-out RBI double of her own to make it 3-1. After a Viking error extended the inning and allowed Anders to score, Schley gave herself more run support with a RBI single to extend the lead to 5-1.
Schley sat down 12 of the next 13 BLC batters to preserve the 5-1 victory.
Schley was also 3-for-4 at the plate to pace the CSS offense. Anders had a pair of hits and scored twice.
Game 2: BLC 7, CSS 2
The Vikings (25-10, 15-1 UMAC) responded in game two and took advantage of some Saints miscues to win going away 7-2.
Once again, the Saints struck first as Schley drove in Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) with an infield single. However, Bethany took its first lead of the day with two runs coming across in the bottom frame.
After the Vikings made it 3-1 in the second inning, Schley cut the margin to 3-2 with a RBI triple in the third. Unfortunately, two CSS errors in the fourth led to two Bethany unearned runs to extend the lead to 5-2.
A two-out rally in the fifth inning gave the Vikings two more runs to make it 7-2, which would be the final, snapping St. Scholastica's 10-game winning streak.
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) picked up the loss for the Saints. Schley and Fourre each had a pair of hits to lead the Saints with Schley driving in both CSS runs

The Saints (22-14, 12-4 UMAC) were scheduled to host Gustavus Adolphus College in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday at Kenwood Field to close the regular season. However, forecasted weather conditions have canceled that doubleheader.
That means the Saints will next be in action on Thursday, back in Mankato for the UMAC Tournament. The Saints will face Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior at noon in the double-elimination tournament.
