MANKATO, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – After being swept by the Yellowjackets during the regular season, the St. Scholastica softball team exacted revenge by dismantling the University of Wisconsin-Superior 11-0 to open the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament on Thursday.
How it Happened
In her last start against the Saints, Ashley Taipale threw a no-hitter. CSS had none of that on Thursday as
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) singled to open the game. Later in the inning,
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) singled in both Anders and
Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) to give St. Scholastica an early 2-0 lead.
Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) gave herself some run support with a RBI double in the third. She later scored on a
Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) fielder's choice to extend the margin to 4-0. Anders delivered a RBI single in the fifth as the lead stood at 5-0.
CSS then put the game away in the fifth inning as it plated six runs in the inning. Fourre had a RBI single to score Kailee Pederson.
Kayla Christopherson (Zimmerman, Minn./Zimmerman HS (Itasca CC)) and
Alex Wurzer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) drew back-to-back bases loaded walks.
Ashley Pollema (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) scored on a wild pitch and two more runs came in to make it 11-0.
The Yellowjackets (17-18) couldn't do anything in the bottom half as the game ended by mercy rule 11-0.
Pitching
Schley had another quality start for the Saints, striking out four, while allowing only four hits and one walk to earn the victory. Schley has not allowed more than five hits in each of her last seven starts, all wins.
Taipale gave up five runs in four innings in the loss.
CSS Offense
Fourre was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Anders and Howe each had a pair of hits with RBIs.
