DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated the University of Northwestern (Minn.) 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center to capture the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship for the fourth consecutive year and 22
nd time overall.
Doubles
The Saints got off to a great start, sweeping all three doubles matches. In position No.1,
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) won 8-2.
Sara Wennerstrand (Baxter, Minn. /Brainerd HS (Saint Benedict)) and
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) played just as hard, winning 8-6 as the No. 2 team. Lastly,
Brynne Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) and
Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) took their match 8-5.
Singles
The Saints then took five of the six singles matches. B. Hauer cruised 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 5 spot. That was followed by sister Elise, in the No. 1 spot, winning 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the dual win for CSS.
Wennerstrand dropped only one game, winning 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. Rice also only dropped one game winning 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 position.
The final winner on the day was Jankila at the No. 6 spot by scores of 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.
Up Next
The Saints (15-6, 7-0 UMAC) will host an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinal match on Wednesday against the University of Minnesota Morris. Those matches will take place at Hermantown High School, beginning at 4 p.m.
