DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team opened its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) games of the season with a pair of wins against Martin Luther College at Saints Field. CSS won the first game 6-4 and the second game 7-2.
Game 1: CSS 6, MLC 4
After falling behind 2-0 after two innings, the Saints rallied in the third inning to tie the game. A single by
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) drove in
Sydney Plemel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) to half the deficit, and an attempted steal by
Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) allowed Anders to score and tie the game at 2-2.
CSS added three more runs in the fourth inning to take their first lead of the game, thanks to RBIs by
Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) and Schley and runs by Plemel, Anders and Thul.
The Knights were able to make it a one-run game in the top of the fifth, but a single by Plemel in the bottom of the fifth allowed
Kailee Pedersen (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel HS) to score the Saints' sixth of the game. Martin Luther brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Schley got a pair of groundouts to end the game 6-3 in the Saints' favor.
Schley struck out 10 to earn the complete-game win. Plemel was 3-for-3 at the plate, falling a home run shy of the cycle.
Game 2: CSS 7, MLC 2
The Saints got on the board in the first inning off a single by Schley which drove in Thul and Anders to give CSS an early 2-0 lead. In the second inning, the Saints gave up one run, but then scored one of their own on an Anders RBI to restore the two-run advantage.
In the top of the third, the Knights scored their second and final run of the game, making it 3-2 to CSS. Runs by Plemel and Thul in the fourth inning extended the Saints' lead to 5-2. And in the sixth inning, a single by Josie Fouree drove in Schley and Anders to finish the game with a score of 7-2.
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) struck out three and scattered eight hits to earn the complete game win. Fouree and Anders each had three hits to pace the offense, while Schley drove in three runs.
