csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team won both of its matches convincingly on Sunday down in Florida to begin its Spring Break trip.
CSS 8, Saint Ambrose 1
The Saints began the day by defeating the Fighting Bees (1-6) of Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) 8-1.
The Saints swept doubles play with the No. 1 team of
Sara Wennerstrand (Baxter, Minn. /Brainerd HS (Saint Benedict)) and
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) shutting out their opponents 8-0. The No. 2 team of
Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and
Syd Holt (Crosslake, Minn. /Pequot Lakes HS) won 8-6 and the No. 3 team of
Maria Valentini (Hibbing, Minn. /Hibbing HS) and
Sydney Vyskocil (Ashland, Wis. /Ashland HS) winning 8-3. That marked their first collegiate wins.
In singles, Wennerstrand won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) prevailed 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) at the No. 2 spot.
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot.
Brynne Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) won 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot and
Serena Hutson (Meridian, Idaho/Bishop Kelly HS) won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot for her first win of the season.
CSS 9, Franciscan 0
The Saints closed the day with a 9-0 victory over Franciscan University (Ohio) under the lights at the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) Center.
In doubles, the No. 1 team of E. Hauer and Fink won 8-5. The No. 2 team of Wennerstrand and Rice, along with the No. 3 team of B. Hauer and Holt both won by 8-2 margins.
In singles, Wennerstrand won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. E. Hauer came out on top 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Rice won 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot.
Fink won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 position. B. Hauer won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot and Jankila won 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.
