APPLETON, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team scored four goals in the second period and then held off Lawrence University (Wis.) for a 5-4 win Saturday evening to finish its season.
How it Happened
The Vikings (5-18-2, 3-13-2 NCHA) scored a pair of goals in the first period and led 2-1 at the first intermission. The Saints goal came between the Lawrence goals as
Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)) found the net. He was assisted by
Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) and
Kyle Star (Langley, British Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)). Shots were even in the period at 9-9.
St. Scholastica got things rolling in the second period.
Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) tied the game at 2-2 less than five minutes into the period.
Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)) and
Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) had the assists. Just 41 seconds later, senior captain
Kristofer McKinzie (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) scored in his final game to give the Saints their first lead at 3-2. Fellow senior
Seth Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's (Minnesota Iron Rangers-SIJHL)) and junior
Nolan Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) had the assists.
Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) added to the CSS lead midway through the period with an unassisted goal. Finally, in the final minute of the second period, Star found the net on the power-play to make it 5-2 after two periods. Fralich and Fuss had the assists.
Lawrence would out-shoot the Saints 17-9 in the third period and would cut the margin to 5-4 with over five minutes remaining. However, any momentum the Vikings had, stalled when they were called for a five-minute major a minute later and the Saints hung on for the 5-4 win.
Goaltending
Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) made 34 saves to earn the win. Greg Procopio had 24 saves in the loss.
End of Season
The season ends for the Saints with an overall record of 11-13-1 and 6-11-1 in league play. CSS will say goodbye to seniors
Seth Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's (Minnesota Iron Rangers-SIJHL)),
