DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team defeated Finlandia University (Mich.) by a score of 4-0 on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena to sweep the two-game series.
The Scoring
The Saints opened the scoring five minutes and 42 seconds into the game.
Amber Tilander (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) and
Sam Gorecki (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic (Chicago Fury)) set up
Paige Forsman (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) for her third goal of the season. The Saints were awarded a power play opportunity with seven seconds left in the period and were able to force one save out of the Lions' goaltender before intermission.
The Saints started the second period with 1:53 left on their power play, and were able to put three shots on goal, but were not able to find the back of the net. The Saints had another power play opportunity two minutes later, and this time were able to capitalize on their advantage.
Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) and Tilander assisted
Kennedy Houge (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) for her first goal of the season to make it 2-0.
CSS went on the power play again with 14:17 left in the period, just over a minute after doubling their advantage. The Saints put four shots on net, but were not able to find a goal. In the remaining minutes, CSS put 16 more shots on goal, but weren't able to find the back of the net, and the period finished 2-0 to CSS.
The Saints were able to find a third goal with 3:45 remaining in the game.
Taylor Murray (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) was assisted by
Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and
Tessa Lowry (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School) to make it 3-0. But with 3:18 left in the game, the Saints had to go on their first penalty kill of the afternoon. With 1:30 left on the clock CSS was able to score a short-handed goal thanks to
Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) to make the final 4-0.
Top Performers for the Saints
Forsman, Houge, Murray and Klaas each contributed a goal for the Saints. Tilander led in assists with two.
Lori Huseby (Babbitt, Minn./Northeast Range HS) stopped all 12 shots she faced to earn the win in net for CSS.
Top Performers for the Lions
Sarah Gundy stopped 57 of the 61 shots she faced in goal for the Lions (1-20-0, 1-13-0 NCHA).
