Women’s Tennis Notches Win over the Scots

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team had five singles matches go to third-set super-breakers and was able to get past Macalester College 5-4 on Saturday at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center.
 
Doubles
The Scots (1-1) were able to take two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 dual lead. The lone CSS doubles team to win was the No. 3 tandem of Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and Syd Holt (Crosslake, Minn. /Pequot Lakes HS) by an 8-1 score.
 
Singles
The drama of the dual came in singles play as five of the six would go to a third set. The only straight sets win was Taylor Hays (Altoona, Wis./Altoona HS) for the Saints at the No. 6 spot by scores of 7-5 and 6-1.
 
The Scots would win at the No. 3 and 5 spots by the narrowest of margins in three sets. Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) won her first set at the No. 3 spot, but would drop the second and then the super-breaker 12-10. Jankila would drop her super-breaker 10-8 at the No. 5 spot.
 
The other three singles matches went to the Saints. In all three they would drop the first set and rally to win. Sara Wennerstrand (Baxter, Minn. /Brainerd HS (Saint Benedict)) at the No. 1 spot fell 6-3 in the first set, only to come back and win the second set 6-2 and then the super-breaker 10-6.
 
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) lost her first set 6-4 at the No. 2 spot, won the second set 6-1 and then the super-breaker 10-6. The decisive match came down to Brynne Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) at the No. 4 spot. Hauer lost the first set 6-2, won the second set 6-1 and then won the super-breaker 10-7 to give the Saints the dual victory.
 
Up Next:
The Saints (2-3) are back in action next Sunday when they travel to face Concordia College-Moorhead in Fargo.
