ASHLAND, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team overpowered Northland College in crunch time to grab the 66-60 win in its final road game of the season Wednesday night.
The Action
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) came out strong for the Saints with six points in the first four minutes, allowing CSS a 10-4 lead. The 'Jills (5-16, 2-13 UMAC) rallied with back-to-back three pointers to tie the game 10-10, but by the time the first quarter ended the Saints were back on top 16-12. Scoring was evenly matched amongst both teams in the second quarter. The 'Jills were able to tie the game twice throughout the period, but the Saints never trailed.
With a 23-23 game coming off of halftime, both teams were battling for baskets. It was not until there was about seven minutes left in the quarter that the Saints went on a 12-3 run that allowed them to pull away. St. Scholastica led 47-40 going into the final period. The Saints opened up the fourth with two layups, but then the 'Jills hit a spark and scored 11 of the next 15 points to bring them within four.
Then with just under three minutes left, the 'Jills went on a 6-0 run leaving them trailing the Saints 59-58. Fortunately, Walther was able to make a pair of layups and the Saints were able to pull through and eventually conquer the 'Jills 66-60.

Walther led the game with 20 points, while
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) added 15 points and nine rebounds.
Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) tallied 12 rebounds and four blocks.
Top Performers for the Opponent
Sarah Houle had 13 points for the 'Jills, while Bianca Avalos had 10 points. Lindsay Bressette, Ashton Meadows, and Katherine Taylor all had six rebounds apiece.

The Saints (7-16, 6-9 UMAC) will end their season at home in the Reif Gymnasium against Crown College on Saturday afternoon. The Senior Day tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
