DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica woman's basketball team defeated Crown College 61-46 Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium to conclude its season.
How it Happened
The Saints struck first on a
Mariah Pearson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) layup in the first minute of the game. CSS scored often in the first quarter, going on a 13-0 run to take a 17-7 lead into the second quarter.
A
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) three-pointer started the scoring for the Saints in the second quarter. CSS continued to pile on the points in the second quarter.
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) had 12 first half points and Walther had 10 points in the second quarter alone. Crown struggled to score against the stout Saints defense and the game went into halftime with the Saints leading 40-19. CSS shot 67 percent from the floor in the second quarter.
Crown (4-21, 2-14 UMAC) scored the first two buckets of the second half, showing a glimmer of hope before a
Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) three-pointer got CSS back in control. Crown eventually outscored the Saints 15-12 in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was another low scoring affair. The Storm got within 12, but six straight points by the Saints extended it back to 18 and the final would be 61-46 Saints.
Top Performers for CSS
Walther led the Saints with 16 points. Kennedy and Cieluch each added 14 points. Cieluch also recorded seven blocks setting the program record at 75 for the season. Allison Huber had five assists.
Top Performers for Crown
Patricia Gibson had 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
End of Season
The Saints finish with an overall record 8-16 and 7-9 in conference play. They will say goodbye to six players in Walther, Cieluch, Pearson,
Taylor Nowling (Mora, Minn./Mora HS),
Zoe Bystrom (Cook, Minn./North Woods HS (Hibbing CC)) and
Amber Smith (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS (Itasca CC)).
