SUPERIOR, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior 2-1 at Wessman Arena Tuesday evening to extend its win streak to six games.
How it Happened
The Saints had three power play opportunities in the first period and were able to open the scoring on their third opportunity, with 3:44 left in the period.
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and
Amber Tilander (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) set up
Giorgia Battisti (Bolzano, Italy/Rice Memorial HS (Vermont)) for her second goal of the season to make it 1-0 to CSS. The Saints added a second with 1:25 left in the period thanks to a goal by Tilander.
The 'Jackets (7-16-1) came out strong in the second period. They forced 14 saves out of
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)), while the Saints only had eight shots on goal. And with 5:24 remaining in the second period, CSS gave up its first and only goal of the game, cutting the Saints' advantage to a single goal.
The Saints had opportunities to extend their lead in the third period. They went on the power play three times, put 13 shots on goal and hit the pipe twice, but weren't able to find the back of the net. However, the score stood up and the Saints prevailed 2-1.

Junior goaltender
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) made 29 saves to earn her 29
th career win, breaking the previous program record held by Lindsay Hartfiel. She also matches her career-high for wins in a season with her 10
th.

Tilander led the Saints in scoring with a goal and an assist for the second straight game. She also hit the pipe twice. Thompson,
Tessa Lowry (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School),
Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) all contributed an assist.

Kaleigh Martinson scored the lone goal for the 'Jackets, with Amber Heidenreich credited for the assist. Catherine Johnson stopped 27 of the 29 shots she faced in goal.
