Women’s Hockey Puts Six Past Finlandia

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team earned a resounding 6-1 victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) at Mars Lakeview Arena on Friday evening.
 
The Scoring
CSS got an early power play opportunity with 15:28 left on the clock and were able to force three saves out of Finlandia's goalie, but were unable to find the back of the net. With 5:16 to go in the first period, Courtney Bloemke (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato West HS) scored the Saints' first of the night. Shots on goal at the end of the period finished 18-3 in favor of CSS.
 
It would take the Saints 11 minutes of action in the second period before they doubled their lead. Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) set up Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) to make it 2-0 to CSS. The Saints added a third with 5:22 left in the period, after Klaas was assisted by Thompson and Anderson. But just over a minute later, the Lions were able to get one back and make it 3-1.
 
Shortly after Finlandia scored, the Saints went on the power play. After just 15 seconds they were able to restore their three-goal advantage to make it 4-1. Shots on goal at the end of the period finished 25-7 in favor of CSS.
 
Three minutes into the third period, the Saints gave up a power play, but didn't allow the Lions a single shot on goal during the penalty kill. The score stood at 4-1 until there was 3:56 left on the clock, after Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) scored her first of the night. The Saints were able to get their sixth and final goal with 1:59 left in the game thanks to a power play goal by Thompson.
 
Top Performers for the Saints
Thompson and Anderson led the Saints in points, each recording four. Klaas added three points.
 
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) stopped nine of 10 shots in the first periods to earn the win. Maddy Benson (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield HS) stopped all six shots in the third period. Thomeczek is now one win shy of tying the program record for career wins.
 
Top Performers for the Lions
Kallin Morris had the lone goal for the Lions. Annah Smiddy stopped 50 of the 56 shots she faced for the Lions.
