DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team came a match short in a 4-3 loss to College Street rival University of Minnesota Duluth to open the season Friday night at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center.
Doubles:
The Saints started out strong capturing the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. The No. 2 team of
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) won 6-4. The No. 3 team of
Brynne Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) and
Syd Holt (Crosslake, Minn. /Pequot Lakes HS) won 6-3.
UMD was considered the home team for the match so NCAA Division II rules were played, thus only one point counting for doubles.
Singles:
With CSS taking the doubles point that meant the Bulldogs had to take four of the six singles matches. They would do just that, taking four matches in straight sets.
Both St. Scholastica singles wins came by way of a third-set super-breaker.
Sara Wennerstrand (Baxter, Minn. /Brainerd HS (Saint Benedict)) won at the No. 2 spot 7-5, 5-7, (10-7). B. Hauer narrowly defeated her opponent at the No. 5 spot 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, (10-6).

The Saints will face Bethel University next Friday in White Bear Lake. Action is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
