csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team scored a pair of special teams goals in the first period and then added two more goals late to complete the series sweep of St. Norbert College (Wis.) with a 4-0 victory on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
The Saints got on the board with less than five minutes to play in the first period as CSS killed a 5-on-3 for 37 seconds and after one player got out of the box to make it 5-on-4,
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) skated in to beat the goaltender, scoring short-handed, to make it 1-0.
Later in the period, with CSS now on the power-play,
Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) scored for the second straight night off a rebound to extend the lead to 2-0 at the first intermission.
Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and
Sam Gorecki (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic (Chicago Fury)) had the assists.
The Saints would have three power-plays in the second period, but the score remained 2-0 entering the third period. St. Norbert (2-6-0, 2-2-0 NCHA) out-shot the Saints 10-6 in the final period, but it would be the Saints that found the net. With three minutes remaining,
Courtney Bloemke (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato West HS) skated in on a 2-on-1 and put it home to make it 3-0.
St. Scholastica added the fourth goal in the waning moments as Thompson scored on the empty-net to make the final 4-0.
Paige Forsman (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) and
Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) were credited with the assists.
Goaltending
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) made 30 saves for her first shutout of the season. Anais Aurard had 16 saves for the Green Knights.
