DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team could not convert on four power-plays in the third period, while the University of Wisconsin-Superior scored early in the third and then added an empty-netter late to defeat the Saints 2-0 Tuesday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
Both teams had one power-play opportunity in the first period, but the first 20 minutes was scoreless with UWS having a 10-8 shot advantage.
The Yellowjackets (5-1-1) came out aggressive in the second period and had quality scoring chances, but CSS goaltender
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) made some nice saves and had some luck with the iron as the game remained scoreless entering the third period.
Just over a minute into the third period, Superior got on the scoreboard as CC Hayes put in a rebound to make it 1-0. The Saints were looking for the equalizer moments later, but
Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) struck the pipe.
The Yellowjackets then committed three penalties in the span of one minute midway through the period. That meant the Saints had a whole two minutes of 5-on-3 hockey. However, CSS would only get two shots on goal in that timeframe and Yellowjackets were able to kill off all three penalties.
The Saints had one more power-play opportunity in the final three minutes, but once again could not find the tying goal. UWS added an empty-net goal with 17 seconds left to make the final 2-0.
Goaltending
Thomeczek made 26 saves for the Saints, while Catherine Johnson had 20 saves for the Yellowjackets.
Up Next
The Saints (4-6-0) are now off until January 10 when they will host the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a two-game non-conference series.
