Women’s Basketball Handles Crown for First Conference Win

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) scored 27 points in leading the St. Scholastica women's basketball team to a 60-43 victory on Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium for its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) victory of the year.
 
How It Happened
The Saints would struggle to score for the first three minutes of the game, but would get on the board with a three pointer by Alison Huber (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS (Hibbing CC)). A layup by Crown (2-6, 0-2 UMAC) increased its lead to 6-3 before Kennedy made a layup to bring deficit to one at 6-5. The Saints then went on an 11-2 run the remainder of the quarter with Kennedy scoring six and A. Huber adding five to go into the quarter break up 16-8.
 
St. Scholastica came out in the second quarter to go on an 8-3 run courtesy of eight straight points from Kennedy to go up 24-11. The Saints traded buckets with Crown for the remainder of the half with Crown gaining a two-point advantage in the last five minutes of the quarter. CSS went into halftime up 34-23. Kennedy had nearly half of CSS' points with 16.
 
CSS would hold its lead at 45-33 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, Kennedy came out to score four straight points for the Saints to bring the score to 49-35. Kennedy finished with seven points in the final frame to make the final 60-43.
 
Top Performers
The Saints were led offensively by Kennedy with 27 points. Karli Skog (Crosslake, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS (Jamestown)) added eight points and sister duo Alison Huber (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS (Hibbing CC)) and Kaela Huber (Washburn, Wis./Ashland HS (Northland)) followed with 10 and seven points, respectively. Morgan Anderson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS (UW-Superior)) led the team in rebounds with six and A. Huber led the Saints with three assists in the win.
 
Up Next
The Saints (2-6, 1-1 UMAC) will travel across the bridge to Superior for a conference matchup against University of Wisconsin-Superior on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
