SUPERIOR, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team trailed by as much as 18 before cutting the deficit to three early in the fourth quarter, but the comeback would fall short giving the University of Wisconsin-Superior a 75-64 win Wednesday night in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.
How It Happened
The Saints would get on the board with a layup from former Yellowjacket
Morgan Anderson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS (UW-Superior)) to get an early tie at 2-2. The Saints would trade baskets with UW-Superior with the biggest lead for the Yellowjackets (5-4, 3-0 UMAC) being three points in the first five minutes of the quarter. UWS would go on an 9-0 run in the next two minutes to increase its lead to 21-9. The Saints closed out the remaining three and a half minutes on a 7-4 run to slim the deficit to 25-16.
CSS got great offensive opportunities, but would be unable to capitalize on a large share of them. The Saints would only be able to convert 3-of-13 field goals in the second quarter putting up 10 points. Going into halftime the Saints trailed UW-Superior 37-26. UWS outscored the Saints 12-2 in fast break points in the first half
The third quarter started out with a UWS 9-2 run in the first four minutes to go up 46-28, the largest lead of the game. The Saints would battle back scoring seven straight points to lessen the Yellowjacket lead to 46-35. St. Scholastica trimmed its deficit down to 51-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
Alison Huber (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS (Hibbing CC)) had seven points in the period.
The Saints got to quick buckets by
Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) and
Amelia Zmuda (Saint Anthony, Minn./Saint Anthony Village HS) to bring UW-Superior's lead to three at 51-48 with nine minutes left in the game. This would be the smallest margin for the Yellowjackets the rest of the quarter as the Saints would not make another field goal for nearly six minutes. The Yellowjackets would pull away and win by a final of 75-64.
Top Performers
The Saints were led by Anderson with 15 points and six rebounds. A. Huber added 11 points and
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) and
Ramsey Moe (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) scored eight points each.
