Men’s Basketball Opens Conference Play this Week

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team will begin Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action this week with a pair of home games at the Reif Gymnasium.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-The Saints are coming off their first victory of the season, a 92-85 overtime win at Finlandia University (Mich.) last Tuesday.
-Sophomore Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) scored a career-high 37 points in the win, including 30 points in the second half and overtime.
-The 37 points are the fourth-most in a game in program history.
-Carlson and junior Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) combined to score 59 of the team's 92 points.
-To along with 22 points, Wilken grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds.
-The 19 rebounds are the third-most in a game in program history.
-Wilken is second in the conference, averaging 9.3 rebounds per game.
-Carlson is fourth in the conference making 51 percent of his field goal attempts.
-First-year point guard Cade Goggleye (Nett Lake, Minn./North Woods HS) leads all UMAC players and ranks 22nd in NCAA Division III with a 3.67 assist-to-turnover ratio.
-CSS has struggled shooting thus far in all facets, making only 39 percent of all field goals, 30 percent of 3-point field goals and 62 percent of free throws.
 
What You Need to Know about North Central:
Record: 2-5, 0-0 UMAC
-The Rams have beaten just one team this season and that has been Emmaus Bible College (Iowa).
-NCU averaged 134 points per game in those two wins, which have bumped up its offensive numbers.
-North Central is averaging just 71.4 points per game in the five losses.
-NCU is led by first-year head coach Dan DeWitt, who had been an assistant at Bethany Lutheran College.
-The Rams rank ninth in NCAA Division III with 235, 3-point field goal attempts.
-Micah Filer leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.3 points per game.
-Filer also leads the team, averaging 5.9 rebounds per game.
-Filer is making 53 percent of his 3-point attempts.
-North Central was picked to finish eighth in the UMAC preseason coaches' poll.
 
Series Record: CSS leads 26-9 (Last Meeting: 87-73 CSS – 1/23/2019)
 
Series History: The Saints have won seven straight over the Rams and are 15-3 all-time at the Reif against North Central.
 
What You Need to Know about Crown:
Record: 1-5, 0-0 UMAC
-The Storm's lone victory of the season was a three-point win over Hamline University.
-Crown has lost four straight games since then and will face the University of Northwestern (Minn.) to open the conference slate on Wednesday.
-Crown will be led by reigning UMAC Player of the Year Timothy Wendel.
-Wendel is second in the conference, averaging 18.7 points per game.
-He leads the conference in rebounds (67) and blocks (9).
-The Storm have allowed 91.6 points per game, most in the conference.
-They have also turned the ball over a conference-worst 96 times.
-Crown was picked to finish fourth in the UMAC preseason coaches' poll.
 
Series Record: CSS leads 37-5 (Last Meeting: 73-72 CSS – 2/16/2019)
 
Series History: In last year's regular season finale at the Reif, the Saints outscored the Storm 14-3 over the final five minutes to win by one point … CSS is 19-1 all-time against Crown at home.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints will be across the Bridge on Wednesday, December 11 to face rival University of Wisconsin-Superior.
