Women’s Basketball Overcomes Slow Start to Roll over Waldorf

SUPERIOR, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team failed to make a field goal in the first five minutes of the contest and trailed by six after the first quarter, but proceeded to out-score Waldorf University (Iowa) 57-34 the rest of the way to cruise to a 68-51 victory on Sunday at the University of Wisconsin-Superior Shootout Holiday Classic.
 
How It Happened
The Warriors (2-10) jumped out a 4-0 lead as the Saints did not make their first field goal until a Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) basket with 4:38 remaining in the first quarter. Waldorf scored the final five points of the quarter to lead 17-11 heading into the second.
 
CSS opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Alison Huber (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS (Hibbing CC)) and Emma Schmidt (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS). Kennedy gave the Saints their first lead of the game at 19-17 with 6:21 left in the half. Later in the period, Kennedy would convert an and-one to give St. Scholastica the advantage for good. CSS went into halftime with a 31-26 lead. Kennedy and A. Huber combined for 14 of the team's 20 points in the second quarter.
 
The Saints used a 9-0 run early in the second half to distance themselves from the Warriors and make the margin 15. CSS led 47-39 after three quarters of action.
 
A 13-0 St. Scholastica run opened the fourth quarter to put the game away as CSS went on to win 68-51.
 
Top Performers
Kennedy led four Saints in double-figures with 15 points. Kennedy also led the team with four assists. Karli Skog (Crosslake, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS (Jamestown)) added 14 points, Amelia Zmuda (Saint Anthony, Minn./Saint Anthony Village HS) had 13 points and A. Huber 12 points. A. Huber had four steals on the defensive end. Christina Furey (Lake Charles, La./Homeschooled) led the team with six rebounds.

The Saints (4-7) will face Finlandia University (Mich.) tomorrow (Monday) to conclude play at the UWS Shootout Holiday Classic. Tip time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
