Strong Second Half Leads Women’s Basketball to Win over Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team used a 26-11 third quarter to pick up a nice Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) road win, defeating the University of Northwestern (Minn.) 80-67 on Saturday.
 
How It Happened
The Saints would get on the board early with a three pointer by Alison Huber (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS (Hibbing CC)). The Saints and Eagles (5-6, 3-1 UMAC) would battle back and forth for points with eight lead changes in the first quarter. St. Scholastica would get five straight points in the last minute of the quarter by Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) to go up 19-17 going into the quarter break. Emma Schmidt (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the period.
 
The first score of the second quarter would be at the 7:40 mark with Northwestern bringing the Saint lead to one at 19-18. Karli Skog (Crosslake, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS (Jamestown)) would answer with a three to increase the lead to 22-18. Northwestern scored four straight points to tie the game up at 22-22 with just under six minutes left in the first half. Free throws by A. Huber and Lizzie Altendorf (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) would bring the Saints up by one at 25-24. The Eagles gained the lead after a layup, but an answering layup by Altendorf would once again give the Saints the lead at 27-26. An exchange of free throws for both teams would bring the score to 28-27 in favor of the Saints going into halftime. The Eagles out-scored the Saints 9-0 in second-chance points in the half.
 
Kennedy started out the second half scoring four straight points to gain a 32-27 lead for CSS. The Saints extended the lead to eight after a Kennedy layup and a three by A. Huber to go up 43-35. St. Scholastica would close out the quarter on a 11-3 run to gain a 54-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. Kennedy had 10 points in the period.
 
Northwestern came out of the break hot scoring 10 straight points trimming the lead to 54-48. Schmidt hit a three to stop the momentum, but Northwestern would come back and hit a three to answer with the Saints holding a six-point lead at 57-51.
 
The Eagles trimmed the lead to four at 57-53, but a free throw by Altendorf and a layup by A. Huber would bring the lead back up to seven for the Saints. A three by Amelia Zmuda (Saint Anthony, Minn./Saint Anthony Village HS) gave the Saints a strong 10-point lead at 63-53 with four and a half minutes left in the game. Zmuda would hit another jumper and Schmidt hit another three to increase the lead to 68-55. St. Scholastica would get a layup by Skog and free throws from Kennedy and A. Huber to secure the win for the Saints 80-67.
 
Top Performers
Kennedy scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the second half to lead the Saints. Schmidt was 5-of-6 on 3-point attempts and matched a career-high with 17 points, along with a team-high five rebounds. A. Huber finished with 14 points and four assists. Skog added 13 points and four steals.

The Saints (3-7, 2-2 UMAC) will be off for two weeks before they begin the University of Wisconsin-Superior Shootout Holiday Classic where will they face Waldorf University (Iowa) on December 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at UW-Superior.
