csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team scored three goals in the opening 16 minutes to defeat the University of Northwestern (Minn.) in Saturday's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship game at Saints Field.
How It Happened
The Saints got their first goal less than two minutes into the contest as on the first corner of the game
Janelle Rouillard (Dayton, Minn./Rogers HS) would score directly off the corner to make it 1-0. In the ninth minute, Rouillard played a ball forward to
Morgan Friday (Duluth, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's HS), who found the net to extend the lead to 2-0. For Friday, it was her 10
th straight game with a goal.
However, Friday was not done as in the 16
th minute
Emily Olson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) hooked up with Friday, who buried her second goal of the day to make it 3-0. The Saints attempted only four shots in the first half and three were goals.
Alexa Gothard (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Lake Superior College)), meanwhile, made four saves in the first half to keep it 3-0 at halftime.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Friday picked up her third of the day with rope of a shot from 25 yards out over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms to make it 4-0.
McKenzie Nelson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had the assist. Friday also scored three goals against the Eagles in the regular season matchup.
The Eagles would get on the board in the final 10 minutes scoring on a corner kick, which would be the first goal allowed by the Saints against a UMAC opponent this season. That would be all the scoring as the Saints captured their 14
th UMAC Tournament Championship with a 4-1 victory.
Goalkeeping
Gothard made five saves in the win, while Ellie Fryer had two saves for the Eagles.
