Women’s Soccer’s Season Ends in NCAA Tournament

WAVERLY, Iowa (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team surrendered three goals in each half to fall to eighth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.) 6-0 on Saturday in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Tournament.
 
How It Happened
The Sagehens' (18-1-1) leading scorer Bria VarnBuhler got the first goal of the game in the 10th minute. Pomona-Pitzer scored again six minutes later to make it 2-0. It was a 3-0 game at the half thanks to a goal in the final two minutes. The Sagehens out-shot the Saints 15-1 in the first half.
 
VarnBuhler added consecutive goals one minute and 14 seconds apart in the second half to extend the margin to 5-0. Pomona-Pitzer added a goal in the last five minutes to make the final 6-0.
 
Top Performers
Alexa Gothard (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Lake Superior College)) made five saves for the Saints, while Isa Berardo made one save for the Sagehens. Emily Olson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) had the only shot on goal for CSS, while Morgan Friday (Duluth, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's HS) led the team with two shots.
 
End of Season
The Saints end their season with a 14-8-0 overall record. The 14 wins are the most since the 2014 season and CSS swept the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season and tournament titles outright for the first time since 2014.
 
CSS will say goodbye to six seniors – Chiara DeLuca (Twig, Minn./Proctor HS), Janelle Rouillard (Dayton, Minn./Rogers HS), Emily Olson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS), Jordan Lundberg (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS), Jillian Bielicki (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) and Paige Schneider (Plato, Minn./Central HS).
