DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – Augsburg University broke a 1-1 tie with 20.3 remaining in regulation to defeat the St. Scholastica women's hockey team 2-1 Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
The Saints struck early with
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) recording her first goal of the season four minutes and 25 seconds into the contest.
Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and
Lauryn Hull (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS) had the assists. Shots were even at 9-9 at the first intermission.
Both teams had two power-play opportunities in the second period. On St. Scholastica's second power-play, the Auggies would score short-handed to tie the game at 1-1. Augsburg had a 13-9 advantage in shots in the second period.
The contest appeared to be headed to overtime until CSS had tough time clearing its defensive zone in the final minute and the Auggies took advantage sliding one in the net with 20.3 seconds remaining to take a 2-1 lead. The Saints would get one shot off in the waning seconds and the net empty, but would not reach the goal as Augsburg prevailed 2-1.
Goaltending
Lori Huseby (Babbitt, Minn./Northeast Range HS) made her first start of the season and made 31 saves. Annie Juergens had 24 saves for the Auggies.
