Women’s Basketball Starts Out Slow in Loss

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was outscored 49-17 in the first half as it fell to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 73-50 on Friday night.
 
How It Happened
The Saints would fall behind early with only two points for the first five minutes of the game. They would not be able to capitalize on a lot of good looks and would only be able to score nine points in the first quarter ending the quarter down 25-9.
 
St. Scholastica would make a small run sparked by a layup by Lizzie Altendorf (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) followed by two free throws by Shauna Kavajecz (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS (Hibbing CC)), but the lead for River Falls would stay lofty at 37-17. The Saints would be shut out the remainder of the quarter going into half down 49-17.
 
The second half would start out going the Saints way and they would dominate the quarter scoring 18 points, with contributions from six different players. CSS outscored the Falcons 18-9 in the quarter to trim their deficit to 58-35.
 
The Saints would continue their offensive attack, but would be plagued by turnovers and missed layups. St. Scholastica would fall to UW-River Falls 73-50.
 
Top Performers
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) led the Saints in scoring with 13 points on the night. Altendorf and Karli Skog (Crosslake, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS (Jamestown)) added seven points each to finish out the leading scorers. Kennedy and Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) would bring down seven rebounds to lead CSS.
 
Brianna Koop had a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Falcons (3-2).
 
Up Next
The Saints (1-3) will have a quick turnaround as they make the short trip to Menomonie, Wisconsin tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon to face the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
