DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – Junior
Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored a pair of third period goals to erase a 1-0 deficit to give the St. Scholastica women's hockey team its first-ever win over a top-5 nationally-ranked program defeating No. 5 University of St. Thomas 2-1 on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
The Tommies were playing their first game of the 2019-20 season on Saturday and needed only two minutes and 20 seconds to score their first goal of the year as Alyssa Wallace found the net to make it 1-0 St. Thomas early. The Tommies out-shot the Saints 8-4 in the first period and 15-7 in the second period, but the score remained 1-0 entering the third period.
CSS came out strong in the third as
Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) would strike the iron in the first two minutes. Then moments later with both teams battling for the puck behind the net,
Lauryn Hull (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS) found Anderson in front who buried the pass to tie the contest at 1-1.
With 14 minutes remaining,
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) de-possessed the Tommies in the neutral zone and
Sam Gorecki (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic (Chicago Fury)) found Anderson who skated in one-on-one with the goaltender and registered her second goal to give the Saints the lead at 2-1.
St. Thomas hit the pipe midway through the period and pulled their goalie late, but committed a penalty in the final minute. The Tommies would get a great chance for the equalizer short-handed in the final 20 seconds, but
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) denied the scoring chance and the Saints prevailed 2-1.
Goaltending
Thomeczek finished with 37 saves to earn the win. Eryn Cooley had 20 saves for St. Thomas.
