MOORHEAD, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team took a road trip to Concordia College-Moorhead for a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Saints were able to stay on pace with the Cobbers and hold a fourth quarter lead to get their first win of the season 77-73.
How It Happened
Concordia (1-2) would come out of the tip to get five quick points in the first minute of the game.
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) got the Saints on the board with a nice contested layup. After a successful defensive possession Kennedy would make another tough layup to bring the Saints within one point at 5-4. A five-point run for the Cobbers made it 10-4. The Saints would battle back with a five-point run of their own to shave their deficit to one point at 10-9. Each team would trade buckets for the remainder of the quarter with the score in favor of Concordia-Moorhead 21-19. Kennedy had seven points in the quarter
A bucket out of the quarter-break would put the Cobbers up by four before
Lizzie Altendorf (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) would hit a three to once again bring the Saints deficit back to one at 23-22. Allison Huber would hit a three on the next offensive possession to give the Saints their first lead at 25-23. Another three by
Shauna Kavajecz (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS (Hibbing CC)) would increase the St. Scholastica lead to five at 28-23. Five straight points by the Cobbers would tie the game up with six and a half minutes left in the quarter at 28-28. There would be seven lead changes the remainder of the half, but neither team would take a lead greater than five during the final six minutes of the half. We would go into half with a tie score of 44-44. A. Huber had eight points in the second quarter.
Two consecutive turnovers out of the half by the Saints would give Concordia scoring opportunities and it would execute getting five points in the first minute of the half.
Ramsey Moe (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) would make a layup to bring the deficit down to three at 49-46. A scoring drought of over three minutes would be stopped when
Karli Skog (Crosslake, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS (Jamestown)) would make a three to tie up the game at 54-54. About a minute later, Skog would make another three to put the Saints up 57-54. A layup by the Cobbers would trim the Saints lead to one, but Skog would once again come through offensively with a layup to finish the third quarter up 59-56. Skog had eight points in the quarter
The Saints would come out of the quarter-break firing offensively going on 9-4 run in the first three minutes to extend their lead to 68-60. The Cobbers would make a layup, but would be answered by an A. Huber three pointer to keep a strong lead at 71-62. Concordia slowly chipped at the lead bringing the score to 74-71, in favor of the Saints, with a little over one-minute remaining in the game.
A layup by Concordia brought the deficit to one with 19 seconds remaining. A foul on the Cobbers would send Skog to the line where she would make both free throws to increase the lead back to three at 76-73. A Concordia turnover would give the Saints the ball back with six seconds left in the game. A foul put A. Huber to the line where she would miss the first, but sink the second to make the score 77-73 and seal the victory for the Saints.
Top Performers
Skog was the top scorer for the Saints with 20 points on the afternoon. A. Huber and Kennedy added 18 and 14 points respectively for St. Scholastica.
Morgan Anderson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS (UW-Superior)) controlled the boards with eight rebounds. A. Huber was also the leading assister on the day with three.
