LAKE FOREST, Ill. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team fell to Lake Forest College (Ill.) 6-5 in an offensive shootout Friday night to open Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play.
How it Happened
The Saints lit lamp first to begin the night with
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) scoring midway through the first period to make it 1-0.
Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and
Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had the assists. The Foresters answered four minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 at the first intermission. Lake Forest out-shot the Saints 26-7 in the first 20 minutes of play.
Thompson scored again for the Saints four minutes into the second period on the power play to make it 2-1 CSS.
Tessa Lowry (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School) assisted the goal. Less than three minutes later, Lake Forest tied it again.
The Foresters took their first lead of the game with nine minutes remaining in the second period with a power-play goal. CSS then responded with a Kasel goal with a minute, 34 seconds remaining in the second period to make it 3-3 at the second intermission. Anderson and Thompson were credited with the assists.
Lake Forest then opened the game up in the third period with three goals in the span of five minutes and 23 seconds to make it 6-3. The Saints pulled the goaltender with 3:25 remaining and made a run at the Foresters with extra-attacker goals by
Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) and Kasel to cut the margin to 6-5.
CSS would get one more shot attempt on net in the final 20 seconds, but it would not be the equalizer as the Foresters hung on for the 6-5 victory.
The five goals scored match a program record for goals scored in loss (UW-River Falls-1/12/2016).
