DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team was outshot 35-11, but had a chance to tie it late before coming up short in a 2-1 setback to Gustavus Adolphus College in Friday's season opener at Mars Lakeview Arena.

How it Happened
The first 20 minutes of play was scoreless thanks to 19 saves by CSS goaltender Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)). Lily Holtz (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) got the lone shot on goal in the period for CSS.

The Gusties then struck with two quick goals at about the midway point of the second period. After a Gustavus power-play expired, Kristina Press found the net for the first goal. Then less than a minute later, at the start of another Gustie power-play, Clara Billings scored to make it 2-0.

It remained 2-0 until the final three minutes of the game as with the goaltender pulled, Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) wrapped one in to cut the margin in half at 2-1 with 2:28 remaining. Emily Sabol (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) and Lauryn Hull (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS) recorded their first collegiate points with assists.

CSS would have another great opportunity late, but could not find the cage as Gustavus prevailed 2-1.

Goaltending
Thomeczek finished with 33 saves on the evening, while Emilia Helms-Leslie had 10 saves for Gustavus.
