csssaints.com) – A scrappy three set match entertained the crowd in the Reif Gymnasium for Saturday afternoon's regular season matchup within the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The St. Scholastica Saints hosted Bethany Lutheran College in the early conference match. Both teams would fight back and forth, but the Saints would come out victorious in three sets.
How It Happened
St. Scholastica and Bethany Lutheran (7-13, 1-2 UMAC) would have back and forth scoring before the Vikings would go score three quick points to go up 7-4 early in the set. The Saints would make a run to tie the score at 11-11 before they would score five points in six rallies before a timeout by Bethany Lutheran at 16-12. St. Scholastica would hold onto their lead the remainder of the set and a kill by
Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) would seal the set with a score of 25-19.
The second set would begin with alternating points between the Saints and the Vikings. St. Scholastica would begin a mini run with a service ace from
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) to bring the Saints up 8-6 early in the second set. The lead would change in favor of the Vikings with a quick scoring spurt bringing their lead to 13-11. Rallying points would ensue with the Saints regaining their lead at 18-17. They would remain on top for the remainder of the set to go up 2-0 for the match, winning 25-21.
The third set would begin with Bethany Lutheran going on a six-point run before a St. Scholastica timeout. The Saints would fight back from a six-point deficit and tie it up at 11-11 after a
Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) kill. St. Scholastica errors would result in Bethany Lutheran to regain the lead. Their largest lead would be at 20-14. The Saints would begin their comeback with service ace and a kill by Remer. Another service ace and a kill by
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) would bring the Viking lead down to three. A service ace by
Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) would put the Saints up 25-24. The Vikings would fight back, but a
Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) kill would once again put the Saints up 26-25. An attack error would be the detriment for the Vikings allowing the Saints their final point to win the set 27-25 and sweeping the match 3-0.
Top Performers
Schermann led the way for the Saints offensively with 11 kills. Remer and
Morgan Lohmiller (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS) would follow with nine and eight kills respectively.
Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) recorded 17 assists and Austvold would be right behind with 16. Draper would hold down the back row with 14 digs for the Saints.
Up Next for the Saints
The Saints (10-4, 2-1 UMAC) will finish their three-match home stand when they host the North Central (Minn.) Rams in Duluth on Tuesday. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Reif Gymnasium.
