EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team made the trip to Eau Claire for a non-conference matchup against the Blugolds of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tuesday night. The Saints would fall in three sets, only the third time this season they have been swept by an opponent.
How It Happened
St. Scholastica began the first set up early at 3-1, but would get a strong battle back from Eau Claire when they would tie it at 4-4. The Saints would alternate points with the Blugolds (17-9), but would be matched by nine straight points resulting in a score of 19-9 in favor of Eau Claire. The Saints would be unable to battle back and would lose the set 25-12.
The second set once again was owned by the Blugolds going up 15-6. The Saints would find new life with a kill by
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and two kills by
Tatum Swanson (Carlton, Minn./Wrenshall HS) to bring the Saints within eight points, but their efforts would fall short losing 25-17.
The Saints started out the third set strong with a kill by
Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) and three kills by Schermann to keep the deficit to one point at 7-6 in favor of Eau Claire. St. Scholastica would face a strong hitting attack and allow nine straight points to bring the Blugolds' lead to 19-7. The remainder of the set would be owned by Eau Claire winning the set 25-10.
Top Performers
Schermann and
Morgan Lohmiller (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS) led the way for the Saints offense with six and five kills, respectively.
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) and
Ellie Greenwaldt (Raymond, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian School) were the top assisters on the night with 12 and seven assists.
Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) was the leader for digs on the night with 10.

St. Scholastica (15-8) will travel to Ashland, Wisconsin for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season finale tomorrow (Wednesday) night. They look to finish the conference with only one loss on the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
