DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team welcomed Crown College and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls to The Reif for a Saturday afternoon triangular. The Saints would sweep Crown College with a strong offensive showing. CSS would then fall in a tightly-contested five-set match against UW-River Falls.
CSS 3, Crown 0
St. Scholastica would come out with Crown (3-16, 0-7 UMAC) trailing 2-0 early, but back-to-back kills by
Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) and
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) would put the Saints up and they wouldn't look back. Seven consecutive points would put the Saints up 7-2. Crown would fight back but the Saints offensive tempo was too much for the Storm to hold as St. Scholastica would rack up 18 kills in the first set to win 25-14.
The Saints would once again keep their offensive intensity scoring 11 of the first 15 points of the second set. CSS dominated the second set with 15 kills and would take it with a score of 25-7. An initially tight third set would turn in favor of the Saints once again with a 25-14 win over the Storm to sweep the match 3-0.
Schermann had a team high 15 kills, followed by
Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) with 11 and Remer with seven.
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) and

UW-River Falls 3, CSS 2
After the Falcons (20-12) quickly dispensed of Crown in the second match of the day, they would face the Saints in the finale.
St. Scholastica would jump out to a quick 9-4 lead before River Falls would slowly fight back to bring the score within three points for the majority of the set. The Saints would lead for most of the set, but the River Falls would tie it up at 23-23. Back and forth points would ensue until back-to-back kills by
Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) and Remer would seal the set win for the Saints by a 28-26 final.
The Falcons would come out with a strong lead out of the gate in the second set. CSS would trail the whole set only getting as close as two points at 3-1 and 19-17. River Falls would tie up the match at 1-1 with the 25-20 win. St. Scholastica would flip the result of the second set by fighting back from small deficits in the third set. Lead changes and ties were common with the Saints coming out on top with Remer having four straight kills to get the third set win 25-23.
CSS struggled to gain any momentum after a quick seven-point deficit to the Falcons in the fourth set. The Saints dropped the fourth set by a score of 25-16 to even the match score at 2-2.
The fifth set began with four straight points by the Saints and they would continue their momentum to gain an 8-3 lead. The Falcons made a comeback to tie the contest 8-8. A
Morgan Lohmiller (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS) kill gave the Saints the lead back at 10-9, but Falcons countered with five straight points once again. CSS fought off three match points, but could not fight off the fourth and fell by a final of 15-13.
