No. 12 Bennies Hold Off Saints

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team dropped its second home match in as many days to a nationally-ranked opponent as No. 12 College of Saint Benedict won in four sets on Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium.
 
How It Happened
The Saints held a slight lead early in the first set, but the Bennies (18-4) would go on a 13-2 run, including scoring seven straight points to pull away and take the opening set 25-16.
 
The second set saw St. Ben's lead for the first portion until CSS recorded four straight points to take a 17-15 lead thanks to a pair of kills by Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS). With the set tied at 22-22, a pair of errors by the Bennies followed by an ace by Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) gave the Saints the second set 25-22.
 
Saint Benedict scored the first three points of the third set and went on a 5-0 run later in the set as it did not trail in taking the third set 25-18. The fourth set saw St. Ben's go on a 6-1 run early. CSS got within 20-19, but the Bennies got five of the next six points to take the set and the match 25-20.
 
Top Performers
Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) led the Saints offense with 10 kills. Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) followed with nine kills and Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) had eight kills. Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had 25 assists, while Kelsi Rippberger (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) added 19 assists. Draper finished with 27 digs.
 
Up Next
The Saints (14-6) are off until next Saturday when they host a triangular at the Reif Gymnasium. CSS will face Crown College at noon and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls at 4 p.m.
