Volleyball’s Win Streak Ends by Way of #16 Augsburg

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team welcomed No. 16 Augsburg University to Reif Gymnasium for a non-conference matchup on Friday night. Augsburg would bring their strong offense into the match and come through with a three-set sweep over the Saints winning tightly contested sets 25-23, 25-22, and 25-18.
 
First Set
St. Scholastica led early with kills by Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) to put the Saints up 7-4. The Saints would hold their lead for the majority of the set before Augsburg (17-4) would rally back to tie at 17-17. Two kills by Schermann would be followed by two straight Augsburg points to tie the set up once again at 19-19. Augsburg would gain momentum, following another tie at 20-20, and would hold that lead for the remainder of the set winning 25-23.
 
Second Set
Augsburg would come out of the break firing offensively running up a quick 9-4 lead over the Saints. St. Scholastica would battle back to slim the deficit to 12-9 in favor of the Auggies. Once again, Augsburg would lock back in and score eight of the next 10 points to bring their lead to 20-12. The Saints would turn the tables and take 10 of the next 14 points to trim the Auggie lead to 24-22. Augsburg would remain on top for the set and take the next rally on a kill to earn their second set win at 25-22.
 
Third Set
St. Scholastica would fall behind 6-1 early in the set and would be unable to get a lead on the scoreboard. CSS fought back to bring the deficit to one point at 19-18, but the Auggies scored six straight points to win the set 25-18, sweeping the match 3-0.
 
Top Performers
Leading the way for the Saints offensively was Remer with nine kills. Morgan Lohmiller (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS) and Schermann recorded seven kills each and Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) recorded six kills to round out the Saints top kill leaders. Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had 18 and 16 assists respectively for the Saints. Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) led the way for the Saints on the defensive end with 22 digs on the night.
 
Up Next
The Saints (14-5) have a quick turnaround as they host No. 12 College of Saint Benedict tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon for a non-conference matchup at The Reif. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
