MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was unable to overcome a 28-point deficit at halftime in a 77-43 loss against the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday.
 
How it Happened
The Cougars (12-7, 8-2 UMAC) started the first quarter strongly, opening the game with a 13-0 run. The Saints would not get on the board until there was 2:34 left in the quarter off a jumper. The Saints would then add a pair of free throws to cut the Cougars' lead to nine points, but Morris then scored seven points to finish the quarter with a 20-4 lead.
 
The second quarter was similar to the first, CSS got outscored 25-13, and by the end of the quarter Morris had gained a 28-point lead.
 
The last two quarters were a lot more even, CSS only got outscored 13-9 in the third and 17-19 in the fourth. The game finished 77-43 in favor of Morris.
 
Top Performers for CSS
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) led the Saints in scoring with 12 points. Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) also reached double figures with 11 points. Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) contributed nine rebounds and two blocks.
 
Top Performers for UMM
Elli Stevenson scored a game-high 17 points for the Cougars, also adding five assists. Kendra Raths and Lexie Winter each had 16 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Up Next
The Saints (4-14, 4-7 UMAC) travel across the bridge on Wednesday for a matchup against the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
