csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team had a sturdy start, but faced a daunting second quarter that cost them a 84-47 loss against the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Thursday night.
The Action
The Saints came out strong in the opening minutes of play, scoring first and jumping out to a 7-4 lead over the Yellowjackets (19-2, 11-1 UMAC). The 'Jackets responded with a 14-2 run to close out the quarter that left the Saints trailing by six.
UWS ultimately would outscore the Saints 28-6 from the midway point of the first quarter to the midway point of the second quarter. Superior led 46-21 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Saints relentlessly chipped away at the 'Jackets advantage, but still were behind 65-34 going into the final quarter. The 'Jackets outscored the Saints 19-13 in the fourth quarter to solidify their 84-47 win.
Top Performers
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) led the Saints with 15 points.
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) added 13 points and three steals, while
Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) tallied seven rebounds and two blocks.
Top Performers for the Opponent
Emily Carpenter had a game-high 15 points. Eva Reinertsen contributed 13 points and Hannah Norlin had 10 points and eight rebounds.
