DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team started and ended strong to emerge triumphant against Martin Luther College in a 74-39 contest on Wednesday night at the Reif Gymnasium.
The Action
Coming off of a tough weekend, the Saints made quick work of the Knights (1-11, 1-3 UMAC).
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) opened up the scoring with a three-pointer to initiate a 12-2 run giving St. Scholastica an early advantage. The Knights were able to find a couple gaps in the Saints' defense to produce a couple points of their own, but they would still trail CSS by six going into the second quarter. In quarter two, the Saints worked their offense to run off with a 15-3 run that left the Knights scrambling. At half time, the Saints led 36-18.
The third quarter was more evenly matched as both teams scored consistently throughout the period. However, the spread that St. Scholastica created in the first half allowed the squad to stay in the lead by 21 points. In the final quarter, the Saints dominated both ends of the court. They were able to hold the Knights to just four points, two of which came from free throws in the final seconds of play. Additionally, they were able to move the ball around the perimeter quickly to find open shots which granted them 18 more points. In the end, the Saints earned the 74-39 victory over the Knights.
