Men’s Hockey Begins Divisional Stretch this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team will look to turn things around as it is set to visit Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) North Division foes Finlandia University (Mich.) and No. 6 St. Norbert College (Wis.) this weekend.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-The Saints were again swept last weekend by two teams from the NCHA's South Division, fourth-place Milwaukee School of Engineering and fifth-place Concordia University Wisconsin.
-With the two losses, the Saints are below .500 in conference play.
-The Saints now rank fourth in the NCHA's North Division and are three points back from the third place team, Northland College.
-The Saints are in search of their first victory in 2019.
-The Saints have used all three of their goalies in their four 2019 games, and haven't had a goalie start back-to-back games since December 30th to January 4th with Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)).
-CSS committed 12 penalties for 24 minutes over the weekend and allowed three power play goals.
-Over the weekend five different Saints recorded goals. Michael Talbot (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS (Minot-NAHL)), Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)), Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)), Jon Hansen (Twig, Minn./Duluth Marshall (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)), and Seth Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's (Minnesota Iron Rangers-SIJHL)) all tallied for the Saints.
-Golka now leads the Saints in points with 17, he still holds the lead in goals with nine.
-Sophomore Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) is second on the team with 16 points, he leads all skaters with 15 assists.
-Fralich's 15 assists also lead all NCHA players.
-The Saints outshoot opponents in the first period only. They're outshot by 31 in the second period and 13 in the third.
-The Saints are 0-4 when they fail to score first and are winless when trailing at an intermission.
 
What You Need to Know about Finlandia:
Record: 5-10-2, 3-5-2 NCHA
-After a four-game skid to end 2018, the Lions have stepped it up. They are 2-1-1 to start the new year including a tie on the road against Marian University.
-After CSS' latest struggles the Lions are one point behind the Saints for fourth in the NCHA North Division.
-The Lions are 2-7-0 at home this season.
-Sophomore Cale Markham leads the Lions with five goals.
-Freshman Teddy Randell and sophomore Adam Wammes lead the group with six assists. Randell leads the team with nine points.
-Sophomore Marcus Gloss owns a 5-8-2 record this season including two shutouts. He has a .920 save percentage with a 2.76 GAA.
-The Lions are 4-0-2 when they score first and 1-10 when they don't.
-Finlandia has been out-scored 15-5 in the first period.

Series History: The Saints are 5-1-0 all time in Hancock. Their only loss there, and in the series, was a 4-3 setback in November 2014. The Saints have never scored less than three goals against the Lions and have scored six or more goals five different times.
 
What You Need to Know about St. Norbert:
Record: 10-4-3, 6-3-1 NCHA
-St. Norbert is tied for first in the North Division with 13 points and is one point off the overall leader Lake Forest College (Ill.) in the NCHA.
-St. Norbert is ranked No. 6 in the country in the USCHO.com polls and No. 7 by D3hockey.com.
-The Green Knights are 7-0-2 at home this season.
-The Green Knights have played six ranked opponents this season, and are 2-3-1. In those games they are 0-3-1 when games go to overtime.
-Riley Christensen leads the team with nine goals and 16 points.
-Luke Davidson leads the Green Knights with 11 assists.
-T.J. Black has a 9-4-2 record on the season. He ranks sixth in NCAA Division III with a 1.57 goals against average.
-Black's four shutouts are tied for second nationally.
-St. Norbert ranks fourth in the country, allowing just 1.65 goals per game.
-SNC is outscoring teams 27-6 in the second period.
-The Green Knights are 0-2-0 when trailing after two periods and uncharacteristically have lost two games when leading after two. They are 7-3-2 when scoring first.
 
Series Record: SNC leads 54-14-4 (Last Meeting: 4-1 SNC – 2/2/2018)
 
Series History: These two teams have had a lot of history and the Green Knights have controlled the series. In the last 10 games the Saints are 2-7-1, but did knock off a No. 1 ranked St. Norbert squad last season. St. Norbert is known for their dominance throughout Division III hockey, in the last 36 meetings between these teams the Green Knights have been ranked as No. 7 or better dating back to 2005. The Green Knights were ranked No. 1 in the country in 10 of those games. The Saints last won at the Cornerstone in February of 2015.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints return home for the start of their final four regular season home games as they will host Lawrence University (Wis.) and Marian University (Wis.) next weekend.
