Volleyball Plays in Saint Benedict Invite Saturday

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team will be back in the Midwest this weekend when it takes part in the College of Saint Benedict Invitational on Saturday.

What You Need To Know About The Saints:
-The Saints went 1-3 at the season-opening Pacific Coast Classic in Claremont, California over the weekend.
-The Saints lost their season opener for the first time since 2009, falling to Chapman (Calif.) in three sets on Friday. They also lost the next two matches in three sets, Pomona-Pitzer on Friday, then to Cal Lutheran in the first match on Saturday.
-The Saints won their final match in California in exciting fashion, topping Union (N.Y.) in five sets to close out the trip.
-Junior Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) was named to the PCC All-Tournament Team, she also set a career high in Aces in their win over Union.
-This is the third straight season the Saints have started off with a 1-3 record.
 
What You Need To Know About Simpson:
Record: 2-3, 0-0 ARC
-The Storm opened their season with three straight loses to Hamline, Carleton, and St. Olaf. Since then they bounced back to two straight victories over Macalester and Grinnell.
-Over the last two victories, juniors Madison Hawtrey and Morgan Taylor paced the Storm with 22 kills.
-Through the first five matches of the season, five different Storm players have 30 or more kills.
-Simpson was voted to finish eighth in the American Rivers Conference.
 
Series Records: Tied at 2-2 (Last Meeting: 3-0 CSS – 9/17/11)
 
Series History: The Saints have not faced Simpson since a three set sweep in 2011 at this very same invitational. They have met only three other times dating back all the way to 1983 and have never met twice in a five year window.
 
What You Need To Know About Saint Benedict:
Record: 3-2, 0-0 MIAC
-The Bennies opened their season in Atlanta, Ga. There they won three of four matches, with victories over SUNY-New Paltz, Maryville College, and Whitter College. Then they returned to the Midwest falling to UW-Eau Claire in five sets.
-Through the first five matches, the Bennies have five players with 30 kills or more. Leading them is sophomore Hunter Weiss with 55.
-Saint Benedict finished 2017 second in the MIAC regular season, but went on to win the postseason tournament, but fell in the first round of the national tournament to UW-La Crosse. They are voted to finish second again in the MIAC coaches poll for 2018 behind Gustavus Adolphus.
 
Series Records: CSS leads 16-14 (Last Meeting: 3-0 CSB – 9/26/17)
 
Series History: Early in the series history the Saints had their way with Saint Benedict winning the first 13 matches and only losing 3 sets in those matches. 12 of the 13 wins came in 1985 or earlier, the teams would not face off again until August. Since that August 2002 meeting St. Ben's has won 14 of the last 17 meetings, and eight straight. The last win for CSS in the series was the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Tournament.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints will head to the Bethel Invitational where they will play two non-conference games Friday, Sept. 14 against Luther College (Iowa) and Bethel. Then on Saturday, Sept. 15 they will kick off their conference schedule against Crown College and Martin Luther College in New Ulm.
