Volleyball to Play Four Matches over the Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team heads to the Twin Cities to take part in the Bethel University Invitational Friday, then to New Ulm Saturday to begin Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.

What You Need To Know About The Saints:
-After splitting two matches at the Saint Benedict Invitational last weekend the Saints move to a record of 2-4. They will look to open up UMAC play on Saturday after tuning up at the Bethel Invitational on Friday.
-Tatum Swanson (Carlton, Minn./Wrenshall HS) recorded her 100th career kill and Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) her 400th career dig last Saturday.
-The Saints were voted into the fourth place spot in the UMAC coaches' preseason poll. They'll play the number six & seven seeds on Saturday as they look to start 2-0 in UMAC play for the first time since 2014.
-Through the first six matches the Saints have five players with 20 kills or more. (Led by Brooke Schermann's (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), 57) They also have two players with 50 or more assists. (Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS), 126)
-Schermann is 27 kills shy of 400 and 34 digs shy of 500 for her career.
 
 
What You Need To Know About Luther:
Record: 6-3, 0-0 ARC
-The Norse are off to a good start already have been selected to finish second in the American River Conference (ARC) preseason coaches' poll with three first place votes.
-After starting the season 2-3, the Norse are on a four-match winning streak after sweeping the ACM Tournament.
-Through the first nine matches of the season, four different Norse players have 60 or more kills. (Emma Veum, 103)
 
Series Records: CSS leads 3-1 (Last Meeting: 3-0 CSS – 9/4/10)
 
Series History: The Saints have not faced Luther since a sweep in 2010. The two teams split the first two meetings in '89 and '96, the Saints have won the last two matches dating back to '06.
 
 
What You Need To Know About Bethel:
Record: 6-2, 0-0 MIAC
-The Royals opened their season with six straight wins sandwiched between two losses. Both their losses came in four sets at the hands of Wartburg College (Iowa) and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
-Their most impressive match so far on the year is a five-set victory over then 15th ranked University of Northwestern (Minn.).
-Through the first five matches, the Royals have six players with 30 kills or more. (Tina Hoppe, 84)
-Bethel was voted to finish sixth in the MIAC preseason coaches' poll, just a few points behind St. Olaf College.
 
Series Records: CSS leads 5-4 (Last Meeting: 3-0 Bethel – 9/9/14)
 
Series History: The Saints lead the all-time series with Bethel thanks to a three-match win streak through the early 90's. Otherwise it's been back-and-forth between the two teams. 6-of-7 recorded matches have been sweeps.

Record: 0-9, 0-0 UMAC
-The Storm have opened up the 2018 season with nine straight losses, only winning three sets in that stretch. Their last victory was in October 2017 against North Central University (Minn.).
-Through the first nine matches, the Storm have five players with 15 kills or more. (Christine Anderson, 34)
-Crown was voted to finish seventh in the UMAC preseason coaches' poll.
 
Series Records: CSS leads 33-0 (Last Meeting: 3-0 CSS – 10/28/17)
 
Series History: The Saints lead the all-time series with an unblemished record. Their 33 wins is tied for fourth all time in wins against one team in CSS program history. In that stretch Crown has only won three sets.
 
 
What You Need To Know About Martin Luther:
Record: 0-9, 0-0 UMAC
-The Knights have also opened up the 2018 season with nine straight match losses, only winning one set in that stretch. Their last victory was in October 2017 against Bethany Lutheran College.
-Through the first nine matches, the Knights have four players with 20 kills or more. (Ruth Buchholz, 55)
-Martin Luther was voted to finish sixth in the UMAC preseason coaches' poll.
 
Series Records: CSS leads 54-34 (Last Meeting: 3-2 MLC – 10/30/17)
 
Series History: The Saints lead the all-time series with the Knights by 20 matches, the 54 wins is second all time for wins against one school.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints will continue their UMAC play with their first home matches of the year hosting a triangular at the Reif Gymnasium next Tuesday with matches between Northland College and UW-Superior. CSS matches start at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.
