Softball Wins Twice in Doubleheader at Morris

MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- The College of St. Scholastica softball team opened conference play with a pair of wins against the University of Minnesota Morris in a doubleheader on Wednesday at Big Cat Stadium. The Saints won by scores of 16-8 and 11-4.

Game 1: CSS 16, Morris 8 (F/6)
The Saints were behind 8-7 heading into the sixth inning, then went on to score nine runs, while limiting the Cougars (6-20, 0-6 UMAC) to one hit to take the victory by mercy rule in six innings.

The Saints opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI by Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS). Morris scored two in the bottom of the second to take the lead, before Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) scored off an RBI by Schley.

Morris regained the lead after a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2, before the Saints added three runs in the top of the fifth to make it 7-2. The Cougars then went on to score six runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-7 in favor of Morris.

In the top of the sixth, Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) scored off an RBI by Rydlund, tying the game at 8-8. The Saints then went on to score eight more runs, capped off by runs by Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) and Bremer, who both scored through errors by the opponent. The Saints limited the Cougars to just one hit in the bottom of the sixth to finish with a 16-8 victory.

Heidi Shelton (Duluth, Minn./Proctor HS (St. Cloud Tech and CC)) picked up the win for the Saints. Rydlund was 4-for-5 at the plate. Bremer crossed home plate four times. Schley and freshman Madison Harris (Billings, Mont./Billings West HS) each had three RBIs.

Game 2: CSS 11, Morris 4
The Saints led for most of game two scoring runs in six of the seven innings to win going away 11-4. 

The Saints opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI by Schley. Morris tied it up at 1-1 to finish the first. The Saints then scored three runs in the second to earn a 4-1 lead heading into the third.

In the third, both the Saints and the Cougars added a run to take the score to 5-2. Both teams added two runs in the fourth to make it 7-4.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Saints scored two in the sixth while shutting out Morris to make it 9-4. The Saints then added another two runs in the seventh while only allowing one hit to take the 11-4 victory.

Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) earned the win in the nightcap, striking out four in the complete game. Harris had another good game offensively, going 4-for-5. Schley had four RBIs, while Bremer had three hits and scored three times.

The Saints (8-9, 2-0 UMAC) are scheduled to travel across the bridge Sunday to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
