csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team began play at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Invitational with a pair of wins over Rutgers University-Camden (N.J.) and NCAA Division II Shaw University (N.C.).
CSS 12, Rutgers-Camden 4 (F/6)
The Scarlet Raptors (0-1) recorded a two-out, two run double in the top of the first, but the Saints would get five runs in the second and five more in the third to run away with the 12-4 victory in six innings.
A RBI single by
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) got the scoring started for the Saints in the second inning.
Lily Kagan (Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service HS) followed with a RBI double to tie the game at 2-2. Two batters later,
Ellie Haney (Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) drove in both Anders and Kagan to make it 4-2.
Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) completed the scoring in the inning with a RBI single to bring in
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS).
In the third inning, the Saints loaded the bases with nobody out. Anders drove in two more runs with a single to extend the lead to 7-2. With the bases still loaded and two outs, a pair of Rutgers-Camden errors on the same play cleared the bases to make it 10-2.
The Scarlet Raptors kept the game going with two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the margin to 10-4. However, the Saints would still end it early with RBIs from
Madison Harris (Billings, Mont./Billings West HS) and Anders in the bottom of the sixth to end game 12-4.
Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) earned her first win of the season, striking out five in six innings of work. Anders went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored to lead the offense.
Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
CSS 7, Shaw 0
The Saints struck early against the Bears (1-9) and
Heidi Shelton (Duluth, Minn./Proctor HS (St. Cloud Tech and CC)) was in cruise control in the pitcher's circle as the Saints finished 2-0 on the day with a 7-0 victory.
In the bottom of the first, Bremer and Thul led off with singles. Rydlund followed by plating Bremer. The musical chairs continued with
Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) bringing home Thul and then Anders brought in Rydlund to make it 3-0 before an out was recorded. Anders later scored on a wild pitch as the Saints led 4-0 after an inning of play.
Schley added to the CSS lead in the second with a two-run triple to make it 6-0. Meanwhile, Shelton was dealing, retiring the first six hitters she faced. The first two batters reached in the third inning, but Shelton got out of the inning unscathed.
Kagan had a RBI in the fifth to make it 7-0 and the Saints cut down a Shaw runner at the plate in the sixth to preserve the 7-0 shutout.
Shelton had a four-hitter with two strikeouts in the win. Bremer, Thul, Schley and Anders all had a pair of hits to pace the CSS offense. Schley drove in three runs for the game.
