NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team had a tripleheader on Wednesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, recording shut out wins over Wesley College (Del.) and Cazenovia College (N.Y.) with an extra-inning loss to Lesley University (Mass.) sandwiched in the middle.

CSS 7, Wesley 0
The Saints scored five runs in the first two innings and junior Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) shut down the Wolverines (6-3) from there as the Saints took the first game of the day 7-0.

Schley helped herself at the plate to begin, with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first to score Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) to make it 2-0.

In the second inning, a couple of Wesley errors allowed more runs to come across for CSS. Alex Wurzer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) scored on a Bremer RBI. Bremer and Thul also scored unearned runs later in the inning to extend the lead to 5-0.

Schley was keeping the Wolverines hitless until a leadoff single in the fourth. Wesley would not get its second hit until the seventh inning. Prior to that, the Saints tacked on two more runs with sacrifice flies by Alexis Ford (Billings, Mont./Billings West HS) and Bremer to make the final score 7-0.

Schley finished with four strikeouts and just three hits allowed in the complete-game shutout. She also drove in two runs at the plate. Thul led the team with a pair of hits. Bremer did not record a hit, but did have two RBIs. The Saints had six stolen bases for the game.

Lesley 6, CSS 5 (F/9)
In the wildest game of the day, the Saints suffered their first defeat in South Carolina falling to Lesley 6-5 in nine innings.

Schley put the Saints up early with a RBI double in the top of the first. The Lynx (5-1) tied in the second inning, but stranded the bases loaded.

CSS regained the lead in the third thanks to heady base running by Cindy Rydlund to allow Bremer to score from third and make it 2-1. After Lesley once again left the bases loaded in the fourth, the Saints added to their lead with a Rydlund RBI single to make it 3-1.

St. Scholastica led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) recorded two outs with a runner on second. A passed ball and hit-by-pitch put runners at the corners. The Lynx then hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at 3-3.

The contest went to extra innings, which meant the international tiebreaker rule would be put into place. That means a runner is placed at second base to begin each frame.

Schley quickly put the Saints up 4-3 on a Schley RBI double to begin the top of the eighth. CSS lined out with runners at second and third to end the inning. Kohl recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the eighth and the Saints were once again one out away from victory. However, Lesley singled up the middle to tie the game at 4-4. It also left runners at second and third and the game continued into the ninth.

After a sacrifice to start the ninth, Ford would score from third on a wild pitch to give the Saints a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, the Lynx put runners at the corners with no outs. A groundout put runners at second and third and Kohl recorded a strikeout to put St. Scholastica one out away from victory for a third time. However, once again Lesley came through with a single, this time bringing in two runs to win the contest 6-5 in walk-off fashion.

Kohl recorded nine strikeouts in the defeat. Schley had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Thul also had two hits in this contest.

CSS 5, Cazenovia 0
The Saints were able to bounce back in the final game of the day thanks to another great pitching performance from Heidi Shelton (Duluth, Minn./Proctor HS (St. Cloud Tech and CC)) to defeat the Wildcats 5-0.

Shelton, who pitched her first collegiate shutout on Sunday, limited Cazenovia to seven hits and struck out a pair to earn her second consecutive shutout.

Offensively, CSS got its first hits and runs in the third inning. Lily Kagan (Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service HS) led off the inning with a single. She later scored on a Karissa Ratcliff (North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) RBI triple. Ratcliff then scored on an Ellie Haney (Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) RBI single to make it 2-0.

Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) ripped a RBI double in the fourth to put the Saints up 3-0. Ford had a RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings to make the final score 5-0.

The bottom of the lineup lifted the Saints with all seven hits delivered from the five thru nine spots. Ford was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
