Kelsey Dickinson (Winthrop, Wash./Liberty Bell HS) wrapped up her collegiate skiing career on Saturday with a 37
th place finish in the 15km freestyle at the NCAA Skiing Championships.
Mass Start Freestyle
Unlike Thursday's classic race, Saturday's freestyle was a mass start where everyone starts at the same time and the skiers are racing each other instead of the clock. Dickinson raced this distance and this format twice during the year and finished 10
th and ninth among Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) skiers in those races.
The skiers went three times around the 5km loop. After the first 5km, Dickinson was 38
th after posting a time of 15:44. Dickinson climbed up one spot in the second lap. She was battling University of Alaska-Anchorage's Sadie Fox for much of the race and ultimately beat Fox to the finish line to finish 37
th overall with a time of 50:01.
Dickinson was fifth of the six CCSA skiers competing. Katharine Ogden of Dartmouth College, who won Thursday's classic race, swept the week by capturing the freestyle title with a time of 43:22.
Final Team Scores
Dickinson's 27
th place on Thursday gave the Saints four points for the championships and put the Saints 22
nd overall. Denver captured the National Ski Championship with 604 points. The NCAA Ski Championships combine point totals from both genders, as well as, both alpine and nordic disciplines.
End of Career
Dickinson finishes her career as the only St. Scholastica women's skier to compete in three NCAA Championships and garner a program-best five all-region performances. She will now focus her attention back on Biathlon where she was a serious contender of making the U.S. National Team in the fall.
