Softball Ends Weekend with Season’s First Win

MARQUETTE, Mich. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team split on day two of the Finlandia University Dome Tournament Sunday, falling to Lakeland University (Wis.), but responding to earn its first win of the season against Marian University (Wis.) to complete play for the weekend.
 
Lakeland 12, CSS 3 (F/6)
The Muskies (2-2) scored four runs in the first and added four more in the sixth, while plating one run in every inning in between to defeat the Saints Sunday morning 12-3 in six innings.
 
Lakeland had 17 hits in the victory, while the Saints finished with nine. Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had two hits and two RBIs to lead the St. Scholastica bats. Ellie Haney (Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) also had a pair of hits. Lily Kagan (Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service HS) drove in the third RBI.
 
Amber Anderson was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Meghan Etten was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Muskies.
 
CSS 6, Marian 1
The Saints scored six runs between the fifth and sixth innings to win their first game of the season 6-1 over Marian.
 
The Sabres (1-3) put together a two-out rally in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. CSS pitcher Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) settled in after that first inning. The leadoff batter in the second reached on an error, but Schley then proceeded to retire 15 consecutive batters.
 
The CSS offense struggled to get going early. The Saints were no-hit through the first three innings, including six straight strikeouts at one point. Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) eventually broke up the no-hitter in the fourth.
 
St. Scholastica really got things going in the fifth. With two outs, Alexis Ford (Billings, Mont./Billings West HS) tripled. Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) followed with a RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. A Bremer single put runners at the corners. Bremer then stole second and Thul followed by tripling down the right-field line to give the Saints a 3-1 lead. Schley plated Thul to make it 4-1.
 
The Saints added insurance in the sixth with a two-out, two-RBI double by Bremer to make the final score 6-1.
 
Schley struck out three, while scattering three hits to earn the victory. Bremer and Thul each had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs to lead the CSS offense. Haney and Rydlund also had two hits as the Saints finished with 10 hits for the game.
 
Up Next
The Saints (1-3) will be in Rochester, Minnesota next Sunday at the Rochester Dome to face Ripon College (Wis.) and Cornell College (Iowa). Action begins at 4 p.m.
