ROCHESTER, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica softball team was defeated in two ACM Dome Tournament matchups on Sunday in Rochester, first by Ripon College (Wis.) with an 11-2 final score, and second by Cornell College (Iowa) with a score of 9-1.
Ripon 11, CSS 2 (F/5)
CSS got out of the first inning without allowing a run, thanks to two strikeouts from Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) after Ripon loaded the bases. The Red Hawks shut down the Saints in the first, then came out and scored in three consecutive innings to make the score 11-0 headed into the fifth inning.
The Saints finally got the bats going in the fifth, but it would not be enough. Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) earned one RBI on a double to left field, which scored Ellie Haney (Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) who had reached on an error in her at bat. Bremer was then pushed home on a single from Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS). Two Saints strikeouts closed the inning, and ultimately the game, with a final score of 11-2 in favor of the Red Hawks.
Schley went 3-for-3 in her at bats and collected four strikeouts from the mound. Thul went 2-for-3 with an RBI. For the Red Hawks, Micaela Encarnacion went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Brooke Bauer and Teara Morgenroth each had three RBIs.
Cornell (Iowa) 9, CSS 1 (F/5)
Cornell started scoring early with two runs in the first three innings of the game, allowing only one from CSS, on a Thul single to center field, which scored Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) for the lone Saints run of the game. The fourth inning saw no scoring from either side, followed by a strong three-run fifth for Cornell to finish things off with a 9-1 score.
The Saints finished with two hits, one from Bremer and one from Thul, while Cornell managed nine. Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) pitched for CSS for the loss, earning a strikeout. For the Rams, Cailynn Wichman went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jana Froehle had two RBIs as well.
