DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- Freshman Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored with less than 11 minutes remaining in regulation to break a scoreless tie as the St. Scholastica women's hockey team defeated Concordia University Wisconsin by a score of 2-0 at Mars Lakeview Arena on Saturday to advance to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Slaats Cup Semifinal.
The Action
After last night's 2-2 tie in game one of the first round series, that meant today's game two would be a winner-take-all game. However, through two periods it appeared we were on our way to another tie and a mini-game to decide the series winner.
The Saints played strongly in the first period, earning three power plays and outshooting the Falcons 11-5, but were left with nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. The second period was much of the same, CSS went on the power play and out-shot CUW 16-6, but were unable to score.
Coming into the third period, tensions were high as the score stood at 0-0. But eight minutes in, the Saints went on the power play thanks to a too many skaters on the ice penalty. Seconds later, Anderson scored from the near circle to make it 1-0 in favor of the Saints. Anderson was assisted by Mac Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (St. Cloud State)) and Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS).
The Falcons pulled their goalie in the final minutes looking to level the score and keep their season alive. But with 15 seconds remaining, Giorgia Battisti (Bolzano, Italy/Rice Memorial HS (Vermont)) scored an empty net goal with a dish from Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) to put the game to bed.
Goaltending
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) saved all 20 shots she faced for the Saints to earn her 10th win of the season and her sixth shutout of her career, which ties a program record. Breanna Thomson stopped 36 of 37 for the Falcons (12-13-2).
Up Next
The Saints (16-6-5) advance to Adrian, Michigan next weekend for their Slaats Cup Semifinal matchup against Lake Forest College (Ill.). The date and time of that contest has yet to be announced.
