FOND DU LAC, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team never led in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup quarterfinal series, falling in game two to No. 13 Marian University (Wis.) 3-2 on Saturday to see its season come to an end.
The Action
The Sabres (20-6-1) struck first once again with a power-play goal from Brock Weston a little over six minutes into the game. Marian led 1-0 at the first intermission.
The second period began with
Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) striking the pipe with a shot. After a Sabre penalty, the Saints tied the contest at 1-1 on a
Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) power-play goal. He was assisted by
Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) and
Nolan Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)).
About a minute after the goal, the Saints were called for a penalty. In the closing seconds of that power-play Marian regained the lead on Curtis Lewington goal to make it 2-1. Four minutes later, the Sabres added to their lead with a short-handed goal following a giveaway by the Saints and Marian led 3-1 after two periods.
The third period was quiet until the Saints pulled the netminder with three minutes remaining. Seconds later,
Kale Derkson (Regina, Saskatchewan/Sheldon Williams Collegiate/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Notre Dame-SJHL)) won a faceoff back to Rose, who took a slap shot that was re-directed by Derkson into the net to make it a 3-2 game.
The Saints pulled the goaltender again with under a minute remaining, but the Saints got only one shot on net in the final minute. The Sabres hung on for the 3-2 victory.
Goaltending
Forbes Ploszaj (Gilbert, Arizona/Gilbert HS (Aberdeen-NAHL)) stopped 25 shots in the loss for the Saints. Hunter Vorva had 28 saves for the Sabres.
