Women’s Basketball Closes Regular Season this Week

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team has clinched a postseason spot, but can improve its seeding this week with games against Northland College at the Reif Gymnasium on Wednesday and at Crown College on Saturday.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-Based on tiebreaker criteria, the Saints have already clinched a UMAC Tournament berth, but can either be the No. 4 or No. 5 seed, pending this week's results.
-The Saints are coming off a six-point loss at the University of Northwestern (Minn.) on Saturday.
-It was the third conference game this season CSS lost when ahead at halftime.
-Junior Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had a career-high 12 rebounds against the Eagles on Saturday.
-Cieluch also had a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds against Finlandia University (Mich.) last Wednesday.
-The Saints will recognize three seniors on Wednesday in Emelia Miner (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS), Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS).
-Minor has played in 80 career games and recorded over 1400 minutes of playing time.
-Brannen will be playing in her 90th game on Wednesday and went over 500 career points last week.
-VanKempen will hit 100 games if she appears in both games this week and is the program's leader in career blocks (146) and sits on 700 career points.
-Junior Rashonna Thomas (Minneapolis, Minn./Columbia Heights HS (Anoka-Ramsey CC)) leads the team in scoring at 11.3 points per game.
-Thomas is second in the conference, averaging two 3-point field goals per game in league play.
-A home win on Wednesday against Northland would be their eighth of the season, the most since the 2011-12 season.
 
What You Need to Know about Northland:
-The LumberJills are 3-20 overall and 1-13 in conference play.
-One of the three wins came against Northwestern just a couple of weeks ago.
-Northland averages only 46.5 points per game, which is the fewest in the conference.
-The 'Jills also average the fewest rebounds in the conference at 32.7 per game, which is also near the bottom of NCAA Division III.
-The LumberJills have a -5.61 turnover margin, lowest in the league.
-They do rank second in the conference at the free throw line, making 69 percent of their attempts.
-Katherine Taylor leads the team in scoring at 9.8 points per game.

-The Storm have had a record-breaking year with 10 wins entering the week.
-Crown is 10-13 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
-Even through the Storm can tie the Saints in the standings, they would lose the tiebreaker, thus eliminating them from postseason contention.
-Crown is coming off a 15-point win against Northland on Saturday.
-The Storm travels to Martin Luther College on Wednesday before finishing the season against the Saints Saturday.
-They have made the fewest 3-point field goal attempts in the conference (54).
-They have the second-most steals in the league with 235.
-Desiree Davis leads the team in scoring at 16.4 points per game, which is third in the conference.
-Davis also ranks in the top 10 in the UMAC in rebounds (6.3 per game), field goal percentage (.445), assists (3.2 per game) and leads in steals (85).

Looking Ahead: The Saints will play in the UMAC Tournament First Round game on Monday night against a to-be-determined opponent. The location of that game will be decided this week.
